There is quite a few cottages for rent, and the once we have seen, have very high standards.
The landscape varies from high peaks to lush lowlands. Some areas are procteded national parks, so remember to read and
follow regulations that may apply to certain areas. The flora is abundant, varied and very colourful. The roads are generall in good condition, and it is quite easy to find tracks and paths for walking and hiking. However, the signposting can be a bit confusing at
times, so you do not always end up where you planned.
Most of East Sao Miguel is rural and quiet, even the larger villages are peaceful. There are many visitors to the area in high season,
but most of them seems to be based in Ponta Delgada, coming to the the Nordeste area on a one day trip. There are a few fine
restaurants, but don't expect too many culinary treats, and some restaurant have very odd opening hours.
You should visit the fishing village by Lombada da Fazend, it is quite picturesque, and if go by car, you will remember driving
down the cobbeled road to the village for the rest of your life.
The maps are very well for driving, but the ones you get for hiking, are not detailed enough if you like walking off the main track.
You can, however, buy large-scale military maps in Ponta Delgada.
Andreas Stieglitz: «Azores – Car tours and walks» is definitly worth the money, but it is not especially helpful for hikers that
wants to explore the East.

A personal recommandation for cottages is Casas do Frade. The cottages are modernized old stone houses, with lovely gardens and
very high standards. Situated 10 min. from Lomba da Fazenda. Also: the owner is very freindly and helpful.
